Halloween: Haunted by Meddling Parents

Ellie and Phoebe spend much of their time, arguably too much pretending to be Elsa (Ellie) and Anna (Phoebe) from Disney’s megahit Frozen. When we reached October, the Halloween costume magazines started arriving in the mail and the girls would thumb through them while their meals were getting prepared (microwaved).  At the end I would always asked them what they picked out and despite the 100 or so great ideas in these catalogs there was no swaying them from being Arendelle royalty.   They would have made cute princesses but I was concerned that there would have been dozens or more Elsas and Annas.    Cristin’s first attempt to coax them into something else met with a strange twist.  Phoebe had tentatively decided to forgo Anna and go as a rabbit but Ellie was holding firm on Elsa.  Cristin informed Ellie that everybody was going to be in Frozen costumes at which point Phoebe became upset thinking about herself as being the loner in the group.   Eventually Cristin persuaded them to make a non-Disney choice and went to online to “make” the costumes.  This year we met up with Phoebe’s crew from school and did the Halloween walk in reverse order around town.  The Parade/Walk that they organize is really great and basically involves walking in a block in the old section of town.  No cars and lot’s of kids and candy and a bit of competition among the houses that get 100’s of trick or treaters.   Very fun but the years really feel like they are slipping by so quickly.  See Halloween 2012 and 2011.
