Sleepover Attempt: Total Failure
The Bungeners are visiting next weekend so Cristin decided to test out having our girls bunk up so that we didn’t have 60 lbs of human consuming half of our floor space. I was thinking we would do this test on a saturday after they were both significantly exhausted but it was already in motion when I got home from work. I read to the ladies in a chair and everybody seemed happy about this augmentation of bed time. Ellie and I put Phoebe in her bed and kissed her good night and then I took Ellie over towards her crib and I could tell, 100%, at that moment that this was going to fail. What gave it away was that she was writhing and yelling No No No No. I plunked her down and rubbed her back and left. She screamed. Phoebe screamed. The monitors screamed. Daddy daddy mommy mommy. Seventeen seconds in, the sleepover was over. Phoebe could not stand Ellie crying and simply had too much heart to let that go on unattended. At this point I have no idea how we are going to let an entire other family stay in the house but we will figure it out.
Saturday we skipped boating and went to the playground and rode vehicles. Ellie napped and Phoebe played with the iPad while I biked and when I returned I biked with Phoebe down some neighboring roads while Cristin pushed Ellie in the stroller. A trip to Friendly’s went as it always does and the girls took home their balloons. Ellie’s survived about three minutes in the house before bursting. She doesn’t really understand the discrepancy in resilience between balloons and balls. Sunday the Howleys came and it was an absolute picture perfect day, 70s with big blue skies. I paddled out to the boat early to gas up and thus avoided being part of breakfast. My weekend treat has become avoiding a meal with the kids. I know that is probably wrong to say. When Poppi and Tootsie arrived, Ellie was extremely shy for about ten minute and then put down her guard. We toured around Woods Hole and eventually anchored in Hadley Harbor near the Forbes houses before returning home as the wind started to build. I went out for another bike ride and when I got back we BBQ’d and went for a quick walk and to bed. I wish we could have that kind of weekend all year.
