Mystic > Boston
I made an executive decision to go to Mystic Aquarium on saturday despite the call for rain. Executive makes me sound like I make rule the roost but in fact I rarely make any of the decisions. I am only good at making bad decisions so I refuse to make any. After swim we got right in the car and headed down 95 to Connecticut. I have always liked Mystic: the town, the Seaport Village, and the Aquarium. Cristin and I visited the Aquarium sometime around 2000 over Christmas break and we had to leave poor Oscar in the car. Cristin was taking him to Wellesley and I was headed to Chatham and I remember feeling really depressed about having to spend several days away from him. He was a great cat and probably would have enjoyed the aquarium. This time around it was a bit more crowded. We first ate at Five Guys and then went into a gift shop for reasons I can’t remember and Phoebe headed down one aisle and came face to face with an entire display of Frosty the Snowmen. She would have been satisfied if we just went home after that. We bought her some kind of ceramic snowman, a completely impractical gift for a two year old but she has continued to treat it with care much to our amazement. After that we went to the Aquarium and caught the sea lion show and then went to see the Beluga whales which is my favorite exhibit. They are absolutely breathtaking. They are small whales, all white with big rolls down their side and no dorsal fin and you can stand and watch them swim for hours. We left at a reasonable hour and managed to miss the rain exactly. It might be a city vs. country bias but I think I would rather go to Mystic than Boston aquarium. Actually, I am sure of that. Mystic is a bit more exposed which wouldn’t work if the weather was really bad but the only advantage to Boston animal-wise would be the sea turtles in the big tank and the maybe blue Penguins. Mystic has the Beluga’s and is much less confining.
