Shortest trip to the Islands Ever
We were in between swim lesson sessions so saturday was open for activities. Cristin decided late friday that we should go to the Vineyard. The New Bedford fast ferry isn’t yet running so we had to drive to woods hole. The day started off foggy but in the end could not have been nicer. We walked around town and found our way to the Tisbury elementary school playground. After pulling Phoebe away we went to the Black dog for an excellent brunch. Phoebe was eating pancakes and sausage faster than I could get it to her. The ladies crashed on the way home. After dinner we walked to the Oxford Creamery for cones. It is not possible to order a reasonable amount of ice cream there.
Above: Phoebe really panicked me when, at the age of three or four months, she was terrified of wind. This seems to have passed. Below: Vineyard Haven is pretty quiet in April. I have only been to the Vineyard in the off season on one occasion and after a high school basketball game (the only source of entertainment there in the winter) got a bit rough we were “escorted” to the ferry by the police and a mob of angry parents. We should have charged an entertainment fee.
Above: The playground at Tisbury elementary is pretty well outfitted. It features nautical themes as well as a camel and an elephant. Below: This was Phoebe’s first time on a merry-go-round. It is fun watching kids when they are dizzy. Not as fun as cats who tend to run into walls, but still pretty fun.
Above: Brunch at the Black Dog was excellent. Cristin declared this one of her favorite restaurants in addition to Foxy’s II in the Virgin Islands and some other random choice. None of these places serve carbonara. I share the BD pancakes with Phoebe and they were excellent. Cristin had some kind of giant egg thing and Ellie ate a jar of orange paste and then another jar of orange paste. Below: The view from the ferry deck. Aside from a cruising family on a Sabre, nearly all the boats in the water were vintage.
Above: Ellie enjoys a comfortable seat on the foredeck of the Martha’s Vineyard. Below: Phoebe digs into her “kiddie-size” cup of chocolate ice cream.
