Tour du Goûter

Phoebe and I were invited to join her buddy Gavin and his father on a group ride to raise awareness about southcoast cycling.   The short ride option was 8.5 miles and I was a little skeptical that Phoebe could complete it but, with a bit of help, she proved me wrong.  We had run out of snacks by mile 4 and had to call in Gavin’s mother to refuel at the turnaround point.   The main motivation after that was keeping up with Gavin on his sweet micro mini BMX bike and the lure of the playground we had passed early in the ride.  Most of the ride was on the rail trail in Fairhaven and Mattapoisett which is a great place to ride with kids.  I have spent quite a lot of time on the Cape rail trail which is fairly expansive.  Most of the Cape rail trail runs through rather boring terrain, essentially a cut through the interior of the Cape with scrub pines lining the route.  This was of course the railway at some point.  There are some more pleasant parts in Harwich and Brewster stretching from the Bike rotary to just past Nickerson Park.  The Fairhaven-Mattapoisett trail is short but is quite scenic.  I am not sure why or how they ran the train along the shore through all the salt marshes but they did and it makes for a very pleasant bike ride today.  There are people in Mattapoisett and Marion working very hard to complete an extension through both of those towns and we are looking forward to using it once it is complete.   A solid way to spend Saturday morning.
