September Day
Cristin was stressing about some thing which I won’t describe here because I can’t. Not for reasons of confidentiality but rather ignorance. I took the girls to Uncle Jon’s for breakfast and we ate outside and eavesdropped on a couple planning a trip to Maine. We were considering joining them until we realized they were taking the Harley. We then headed to Tabor to climb in their boulder garden. Phoebe loves climbing rocks and Ellie was actually putting some effort into it today. The fun ended abruptly on the very last rock when Phoebe reached to overturn a small rock that was sitting in a moss covered crack on the top of the rock and about 100 earwigs scattered beneath her in pure panic. I removed her from the rock quickly so that she would not to disturb any future trips to the rock garden with memories of panicked bugs. When I got home, Cristin felt relieved having quickly wikipediated herself to expert level in some new topic and and we packed and headed out to the boat and went to our favorite spot on a sadly neglected mooring in Marion. I took the girls for a row and Ellie ate the entirety of Cristin’s tuna lunch. I was planning on a big bike ride later in the day so I packed a lot to eat including a sandwich made with natural peanut butter. The taste was ok but the smell was quite odd. I will stick with Skippy for the near future. When we got home I got on my bike and left Cristin to pack and organize the kids for the trip to the Velema’s in Plymouth. I had mulled over the route options a bit but in the end I chose well. There is a large chunk of southeastern Mass bordered by routes 3 and 25 and 58 that largely empty, containing mostly rolling roads through bogs and Miles Standish state park. The park roads were pretty bad but outside the park the roads were paved and completely empty. After crossing rt. 3, the massive alarm towers signaled that I was nearing Pilgrim nuclear and I reached the Velema’s after about two hours of riding and way too much distance ridden with my phone in my hand trying to figure out where I was. Their house sits on a bluff overlooking Cape Cod Bay and the views from their living room and kitchen are extraordinary. The kids were anxious to hit the beach so we walked down the stairs with a random collection of toys and watched them play until a freak rain cloud scattered everybody and left behind an extraordinarily brilliant rainbow that arced right across the Bay and appeared to end in Provincetown. We had a great dinner with ice cream on the porch and then headed home.
