Dropping In
Phoebe really loves the scooter that Gaga bought her last Christmas. The only way I can interest her in her bike is if I get my bike out and ride with her which makes it quite difficult to take care of Ellie who is only interested in scooting her tricycle and bombing down the driveways on it without any concern for her safety or the need to keep at least one hand on the handlebar. There is in fact a moment of relief when they clearly comprehend the need to keep their hands on the bars. Ellie is not there yet, particularly with so many rabbits around. Phoebe likes to race down the driveways too and use the strange foot brake on the back of the scooter. There is a decent size ridge where several of the driveways on the street meet the road and it was only a matter of time before those tiny front wheels decided to just abruptly stop rather than roll over. This inevitability took place a few days back and she managed to get away with only minor road rash which was not a big deal except for the fact that it was unbandaidable. We finally put a small bandaid on even if it served zero purpose. The worst bike rash I experienced was when I lost a three piece crank off my GT and ate it on old harbor rd. I looked at the front of my shin and it was all white and I was reaching a moment of relief when 100s of little tiny dots of blood appeared. I ran home, washed it in the bathroom sink and wrapped it in an ace bandage. The next day I left for a weeklong camping trip with the Moore family, leg still wrapped in the original bandage. Somewhere around day three, Susan (a nurse), advised me to change it. It was at this point that I realized that my body had included the frayed fibers of the bandage into my newly healed skin. It was effectively part of my leg. This was quite worrisome so I dealt with it New England Style – I ignored it. Two straight days of standing in a river panning for no gold and a long white water trip down the Kennebec softened up the skin enough for me to cut and rip it out, losing maybe only a day or two of healing in the process. Very weird.
